Port Angeles, Washington
The City of Port Angeles is the county seat of Clallam County, Washington. Located on the Olympic Peninsula along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Port Angeles has a population of just over 19,000. At various times, the forestry and fishing industries have dominated the local economy, while service industries and high-tech manufacturing have increased in recent years. Notable employers include aircraft parts maker Angeles Composite Technologies, Nippon Paper Industries and Westport Shipyards. Port Angeles is also home to Peninsula College.
Built on the site of two Klallam native villages, Port Angeles became a military reserve in 1862. Port Angeles was incorporated in 1890. 1912 brought the railroads, and Port Angeles's first sawmill, known as "the Big Mill". By the time of its closure in the 1930s, more wood products mills were in operation. The Crescent Boxboard Company, which later became Fibreboard, began operating in 1918. Fibreboard closed its doors in 1970. The Crown Zellerbach mill, originally the Washington Pulp and Paper Company, constructed a new paper mill in Port Angeles in 1920. The mill is currently owned and operated by Nippon Paper Industries. The Rayonier pulp mill which was established in 1929, ceased to operate in 1997. In the late 20th century, the forestry and fishing industries have slowed, in part due to concerns about sustainability. Companies such as Elwha Fish Company and forestry management firm Merrill & Ring reflect the increased attention to environmental balance.
