Olympia, Washington
Olympia is a city on Puget Sound in the state of Washington. Since 1852, Olympia has been the county seat of Thurston County, and became the state capital in 1889. Today the 18.5 square-mile city is home to nearly 46,500 people. Once a major shipping and industrial center, Olympia today is home to Evergreen State College and St. Martins University and is a typical college town with a lively arts scene. State government is the largest employment sector, followed by education and healthcare, and tribal enterprises.
Olympia was settled around 1846. From 1851-1854, the city was the location for the Puget Sound customs, making it a center of shipping activity. In 1873, the Northern Pacific Railroad unexpectedly bypassed Olympia, and the city raised funds for a small private rail spur. Agriculture, and particularly dairy farming, was one of the main industries prior to the 20th century. In 1896, the Capitol Brewing Company was founded. Changing its name to Olympia Brewing Company in 1902, the brewery survived the Prohibition years by making fruit juices. The brewery moved to Tumwater in 1933. The 1920s brought co-op plywood mills Olympia Veneer and Washington Veneer Company. Olympia Veneer eventually merged with St. Regis, and the plant closed in 1967. Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, which owned a controlling interest in Washington Veneer in 1947, sold its share to Georgia-Pacific, which liquidated the plant in 1969. A few lumber companies, including Hardel Plywood, Solid Wood Plywood and Delson Lumber, lasted into the late 20th century. In recent decades, Olympia's waterfront manufacturing has declined, and the area has seen some gentrification.
