Victoria, Texas
Victoria, one of the oldest cities in Texas, is known as the “South Texas Crossroads” because its location is within a two-hour drive of Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Named in honor of General Guadalupe Victoria, who became the first president of Mexico, Victoria is a city in and the county seat of Victoria County. The city is located on the coastal plains of Texas approximately 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and just east of the Guadalupe River. With a population of nearly 90,000, Victoria is a cultural, historic and regional hub for the seven-county area known as the "Golden Crescent" serving a retail trade area of more than 250,000 people.
As the principal town in a predominately farming and ranching region, Victoria’s growth remained steady until the 1930s and 1940s when, the development of the petroleum industry and the establishment of Army air bases sharply changed the economic complexity of the town. Since the mid-19th century, Victoria has further grown into a diverse community. It has become a well-respected medical center, a bedroom city for industrial plant employees, a significant retail complex, and a hub of higher education through course offerings at the Victoria College and the University of Houston-Victoria. Victoria’s access to major highways, the Victoria Regional Airport, railway terminals, the shallow draft Port of Victoria, and the deep water Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort help to attract and support a healthy business environment. Victoria's economy is a diverse mix of education, health, retail, agriculture, and industry. Large industrial employers in the area include Formosa Plastic, the Inteplast Group, Dow-Seadrift Operations, INVISTA, DeTar Healthcare System, and Alcoa.
Victoria’s history in the defense and petroleum industry, as well as periods of extensive construction and development may have exposed workers to asbestos-containing products; thus putting them at risk for developing an asbestos-related disease. If you were exposed to asbestos in Victoria, Texas and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer, you should consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
