Galena Park, Texas
Galena Park is a city situated on the north bank of the Houston Ship Channel in eastern Harris County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. Galena Park is a highly industrial area home to approximately 10,500 residents.
Galena Park, originally named Clinton until the city was incorporated in 1935, settled as a farming and ranching community in 1835. By the late 1800s Galena Park evolved into a railroad center along the new Port of Houston. With the inception of the oil industry in the early 1900s, the Galena Park transformed into a refinery center and experienced rapid growth. The first refinery there was built by the Galena Signal Oil Company of Texas, which was later bought out by Texaco. Another refinery, established by C. D. Keen and W. C. Woolf of Shreveport, Louisiana, was eventually acquired by Gulf Oil Corporation. Other important early industries in the city included the United States Steel Company. Beginning in the late 1930s, with the development of Houston as a major port, Galena Park grew rapidly. However, in the early 1980s, the economy of Galena Park began to suffer. Due in part to the new technology used to haul ship cargo; prior to the early 1980s a team of workers who took up to one week to load cargo off of a ship stayed in the port city and contributed to its local economy, but with the new technology ship cargo could be unloaded in less than one day. Another reason for the declining economy was due to significant layoffs from steel mills. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Galena’s economy was once again jeopardized when sea port administrators tightened security rules that governed whether sailors could leave ships docked at port.
