Union, South Carolina is the principal city of the Union Micropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. The city was named after Union Church, one of the first congregations founded in the community’s early years. Attracted to Union’s fertile land of the Piedmont region, settlers arrived in the mid-18th century and began to grow tobacco, corn, wheat, and flax.
Following the establishment of cash producing crops, Union’s economy began to thrive and settlement expanded around the Pacolet and Tyger Rivers. Thomas Cary Duncan, founder of Union Mills and Buffalo Cotton Mills, arrived in the city and became respected as the community’s pioneer capitalist and industrialist. Specialty products manufactured in Union over the years include roller bearings, felt, bath products, cordage, metal forgings, textile fiber, woven goods, and paper pulp. Today, historic preservation remains an important goal in the Union community. Collegiate and high school sports dominate the free time of many Union residents, with the Union High School Yellow Jacket football team winning five state football championships in the last ten years. The city is also home to a satellite campus of the University of South Carolina; USC Union.
