Irmo, South Carolina

The town of Irmo is a suburb of Columbia, located just twelve miles from the downtown center on the banks of Lake Murray. Irmo was chartered on December 24, 1890 in anticipation of the opening of the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens Railroad depot and was named after the two railroad men responsible for this venture: C.J. Iredell and Henry C. Mosley. The unusual town name is a combination of the first two letters of each man’s last name.

Irmo’s positioning between the Broad River and Saluda River created an ideal location for farming and agriculture; self-sufficient farms were established in spite of the rocky, red clay that made the land unsuitable for plantation farming. By the early 20th century, the town of Irmo began formulating plans to create the largest earthen dam in the world on the Saluda River. Construction of the dam began in 1927 and on June 28, 1930, Irmo became home to newly created Lake Murray. Thirty-seven saw mills were born on Lake Murray, employing more than 2,000 workers. The energy source created from Lake Murray Dam attracted many businesses to Irmo, including General Electric, Carolina Power & Light, and Allied Chemical Corporation. New residents flocked to Irmo’s 528 miles of prime shoreline property as the town’s population continued to rise. Currently, the suburban town of Irmo houses 12,000 residents.
