North Providence, Rhode Island

Established in 1636 by Roger Williams and incorporated in 1765, the town of North Providence is home to more than 33,000 residents making it the eighth most populated community in Rhode Island. North Providence is in Providence county, located in the northwestern corner of the Providence metropolitan area, bordering several suburban communities. North Providence has the distinction of being the smallest town by area (5.8 square miles) in the state. It is characterized as a bustling suburban community with all the conveniences of city living and a small-town atmosphere. Rhode Island College is located on a 180-acre campus in North Providence.

The town remained largely rural until the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century, when several mills were constructed along the Seekonk and Wanasquatucket Rivers. Allendale Mill was built in 1822 for the manufacture of woolens. It also served as a cotton mill during its existence. The mill is particularly significant as it is the earliest known example of the "slow-burning" construction technique that increases the fire resistance of the mill structure and roof sheathing. The mill's six buildings on more than 50 acres were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. From approximately 1921-1971, the Centredale Manor area of North Providence was contaminated by textile, chemical, and drum recycling industries. In 2000, the United States Environmental Protection Agency declared the area a superfund site. The area has since been fenced off from the community with warning signs against eating contaminated fish, and is undergoing evaluation for clean-up.
