Cumberland, Rhode Island
Located in the extreme northeastern corner, in the lower Blackstone Valley, of Rhode Island approximately eight miles from Providence, Cumberland's landscape is rocky and hilly and includes a great variety of mineral deposits, including a rare ore known as Cumberlandite, the official state rock of Rhode Island. Initially settled as part of Rehoboth and then of Attleboro, Massachusetts, Cumberland was incorporated in 1746 and became a part of Providence County. Today, Cumberland is home to nearly 32,000 residents. The Cumberland Public School system, a comprehensive pre-kindergarten - grade 12, enrolls approximately 5,000 students in preschool, elementary, middle and high school. Popular events held annually in Cumberland include the Cumberlandfest, and the Arnold Mills Fourth of July Parade and Road Race.
Cumberland’s rich agricultural resources, mineral deposits, and mill-fueling waterpower generated from the Blackstone River provided a solid foundation for a number of industries, particularly the textile industry. During the 19th century, the textile industry prospered. Several mill villages, which included houses for the workers and superintendents, schools, stores, and churches, set up along the Blackstone River. One of the largest textile mills operating during this time was the Ann and Hope Mill, built in 1866. This cotton mill later evolved into the popular variety/discount store, Ann and Hope, the first of its kind in the United States. Ann and Hope was the inspiration behind Wal-Mart. In Samuel Walton's autobiography, he cites his visit to Cumberland, where he learned about the discount department store business firsthand from the Chase family, Ann and Hope’s owners.
