Willoughby, Ohio
Willoughby is a city on Lake Erie in Ohio State. A suburb of Cleveland, Willoughby is located in Lake County and has a population of about 22,600. Willoughby maintains a manufacturing base which includes metal casting and soldering supplies, but the current top three employers are in the health care, education and retirement services fields. The Willoughby Medical College, founded in 1837, was the forerunner of today's Case Western Reserve University and its medical school.
Willoughby was permanently settled around 1798. The settlement was located along the Chagrin River, which provided power for grist and sawmills. The late 19th century brought a municipal light and water plant, and the Cleveland-Painesville Eastern electric railway. The railway provided a convenient link between Willoughby and Cleveland, encouraging commerce and drawing new residents. The 20th century brought a number of new businesses to Willoughby, and several are still in business today. In 1933, Fusion Engineering Company was founded to produce solder alloy products. Today, as Fusion, Inc., the company turns out a variety of brazing and soldering pastes and automation equipment. Metal castings manufacturer Bescast has its roots in a 1945 company, Brown Pattern Works. In 1952, the Bowden Manufacturing Corporation and Bowden Grinding Inc. were founded. In 1957, the two companies consolidated and moved to Willoughby, where they operate today as Bowden Manufacturing, producing custom machined parts. Other companies active in Willoughby include Momentive Performance Materials and electrical products distributor Mars Electric.
