Settlers from Connecticut and New York began to arrive in the Painesville area of the Western Reserve around 1800, and in 1832, incorporated as Painesville. By 1880, Painesville had two railroad lines and was attracting manufacturing businesses. The Paige Manufacturing Company, which made steam engines, was the largest employer in 1886. In the 20th century, chemical processing became a prominent industry in Painesville. The Diamond Alkali Corporation opened its Painesville chemical plant in 1911, producing soda ash, caustic soda and other chemicals for industrial uses. The company merged with Shamrock Oil & Gas Corporation in 1967, becoming Diamond Shamrock Chemical Corporation. Diamond Shamrock's focus shifted towards petroleum products, and the Painesville plant was closed in 1976. Another chemical plant was operated by the Diamond Magnesium Company from 1942-1953, on land owned by the General Services Administration. GSA sold the facility to U.S. Rubber Company (later Uniroyal) in 1963, which operated it until 1999. Both sites are currently undergoing remediation from contamination by industrial wastes.
