Napoleon, Ohio

Napoleon is a city on the Maumee River in northwestern Ohio. With a population of approximately 9,300, Napoleon is the county seat of Henry County. Manufacturing, retail and commercial businesses make up much of Napoleon's economy, with companies such as Campbell’s Soup and Tenneco among the top employers. Other industries include machine tool manufacturing, automotive components and cold storage. Napoleon's downtown business district has a number of restored historic buildings, such as the 1882 Henry County Courthouse and the Dr. John Bloomfield home, which includes a carriage house.

Napoleon was founded in 1834. Rail and water transportation was key to the city's development, connecting the city with larger markets, and bringing new residents and businesses to the area. By 1866, Napoleon had two railroads, four newspapers, a bank and several manufacturing businesses. A number of Napoleon companies have been continuously in business since just after World War II. In the 1940s, the Campbell Soup Company opened a soup canning facility which is still in operation. The plant, identifiable by the giant tomato soup can which sits near the building, uses vegetables grown by local farmers in its soups. In 1949, the Automatic Feed Company was organized and began manufacturing coil handling and press feeding equipment in 1952. Today, the company has expanded substantially, although its front entrance is still in its original 1953 location. The Gerken Companies, which include Gerken Paving, were founded in Napoleon in 1949, and the first Gerken asphalt plant opened in 1962. More recently, the city has added molded plastics, container manufacturing and cold-storage warehousing to its mix of industries.
