Mount Vernon, Ohio

The City of Mount Vernon is the county seat of Knox County, Ohio. The Kokosing River runs through the 8.4 square mile city, which has a current population of 16,990. Mount Vernon is largely residential and actively promotes its quality of life. Many historic buildings have been restored, including the B&O Railroad Depot, a 1.5-story Richardsonian Romanesque train station built in 1907. Major employers include Owens Corning, Ariel Corporation and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Kokosing Gap Trail provides 14 miles of paved trail on a disused railroad bed.

Mount Vernon was founded in 1805, three years before the organization of Knox County. The community grew slowly at first, with industrial development increasing in the late 19th century along with the advent of the railroads. In 1895, the C. and G. Cooper Company organized as a maker of steam engines. After the turn of the century, the company switched to making compressors, and became Cooper-Bessemer Corporation following a 1929 merger. Renamed Cooper Industries in 1965, the company sold its Mount Vernon operation to Rolls Royce, which operates it as Rolls Royce Energy Systems division. Mount Vernon businesses made important contributions during World War II. The Shellmar Products Company received an Army-Navy "E" Production Award in 1944. Shellmar, which opened its Mount Vernon plant in 1934, made protective packaging materials - cellophane, pliofilm, foil, glassine, etc. - used on food and equipment being shipped overseas. The company was bought by Continental Can in the early 1950s, and later acquired by American National Can which closed the Mount Vernon Plant in the 1990s.
