Massillon, Ohio

Massillon is a city in Stark County, Ohio. Located on the Tuscarawas River south of Cleveland, Massillon has a population of just over 32,000. Massillon's economic base includes steelmaking, food and chemical processing and healthcare. Ziegler Tire, H.J. Heinz Company, Sterilite and Shearer's Foods, Inc. are among the city's top employers. Massillon offers a variety of activities for residents and visitors, including a recreation center, the Ohio Military Museum, and Five Oaks, an eclectically-designed 30-room Victorian estate, and one of only a handful of mansions remaining on Massillon's former "Millionaire's Row."

The first settlement incorporated in modern-day Massillon was founded in 1812 as the town of Kendal by a New England man who built a woolen mill and raised Merino sheep to provide fleece for the mill. Another sheep farmer, James Duncan, purchased land and laid out the town of Massillon in 1826. Duncan also built grist and saw mills, as well as a tannery. As industry developed and new settlers arrived, Massillon grew, and incorporated as a village in 1853, absorbing Kendal and nearby West Brookfield. The arrival of the railroads in 1852 opened Massillon up to larger manufacturing concerns, including steel manufacturing and finishing, and the town incorporated as a city in 1868. Massillon State Hospital for the Insane, an early cottage plan institution, opened in 1898, and operated until 2001. Republic Engineered Products, Inc. operates a steel plant which traces its roots back to the early 20th century, when it was a facility of Republic Steel Corporation. Heavy industry in Massillon has declined in the 21st century, replaced to some extent by retail and restaurant operations, but the city has worked to attract other manufacturing sectors and revitalize disused factory buildings.
