Marion was founded in 1822 near a site know as Jacob's Well. Beginning in the late 19th century, Marion became a center of heavy industry. The Marion Steam Shovel Company, established in 1884, made power shovels, crawlers and draglines in Marion until the late 1990s. Marion equipment was used in the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Panama Canal, and in the 1960s, the company, now Marion Power Shovel, made massive caterpillar-tread crawlers to transport NASA rockets from the vehicle assembly building to the launch pad. Popcorn plays an important role in Marion's manufacturing history. The Wyandote Popcorn Company was founded in 1936, and continues to produce popcorn and snack foods today as Wyandote Inc. ConAgra Foods, another top employer, makes Orville Redenbacher and Act II microwave popcorn at its Marion plant, although it recently shut down its popcorn-bag printing operation there. Although heavy industry has declined in Marion, the city maintains a manufacturing base, supplemented by healthcare, retail and education.
