Lorain, Ohio

Lorain is a city on Lake Erie in Lorain County, Ohio. Located at the mouth of the Black River, Lorain currently has a population of just over 64,000. As with many cities in the Rust Belt, this former steel and shipbuilding powerhouse has seen declines in manufacturing since the 1960s, and a greater emphasis on professional, sales and service occupations. The downtown area, largely rebuilt in the wake of a 1924 tornado, has a number of restored historic buildings, including the Lorain Palace Theater.
Lorain was founded in 1807 as the Black River settlement, with just a handful of families. One of the town's early industries was shipbuilding, beginning in 1820 with wooden sailing ships. The F.N. Jones Shipyard continued the tradition, launching its first steamboat in 1837. Lorain's first railroad came through in 1872, and the village officially incorporated a year later. Lorain's steel industry began in 1860, with the construction of the Edison and Tilden blast furnace. In 1894, the Johnson Company established a steel rail mill which would later become Lorain Steel Company. The plant became The National Tube Company in 1903 and is currently operated by Republic Engineered Products. In 1899, the American Shipbuilding Company opened its Lorain shipyard, building Great Lakes ore carriers, several of which are still in service today. The yard closed in 1983. Ford Motor Company established its Lorain Assembly Plant in 1958, producing more than seven million vehicles before its closure in 2005. Labor disputes, overseas price competition and reduced demand have all played a role in the decline of the steel and shipbuilding industries during the late 20th century, in Lorain and other northern U.S. cities.
