Franklin, Ohio

Franklin is a city on the Great Miami River in southwestern Ohio. Located in Warren County, Franklin has a current population of just under 12,000 residents. Franklin is also convenient to Interstate 75, giving ready access to Dayton and Cincinnati. Long a paper-manufacturing center, Franklin has diversified its economy in recent years. Current employers include Pfizer Global Manufacturing, Burrows Paper Corporation and R. Good Logistics.

Named for Benjamin Franklin, the settlement of Franklin was established in 1796, and incorporated in 1814. For the late 19th and early 20th century, paper manufacturing was the dominant industry in Franklin, thanks to abundant water access from the Great Miami River, and despite a severe flood in 1913 which damaged many of the mills. Around 1900, the Srere Brothers purchased an existing pulp mill, operating it as the Srere Brothers Pulp Mill until 1924 when it was purchased by an employee, Howard Cheney. Today, the Cheney Pulp and Paper Company still operates on the site of the original mill, which was destroyed by a 1934 boiler explosion. In 1946, the Stone Container Corporation acquired a boxboard mill, which eventually became the Franklin Boxboard Corporation. Franklin Boxboard announced in July of 2011 that it would be closing the plant. Miami Valley Paper Company, established in 1914, is still in operation as a subsidiary of Mafcote Inc. In 1971, Franklin began operating one of the world's first garbage recycling plants, designed and built by paper machinery manufacturer Black Clawson Company.
