Conneaut, Ohio
Conneaut is a city along Lake Erie in Ohio. Sharing a border with Pennsylvania, Conneaut has a population of around 12,500 occupying a 27 square-mile area. Lake Erie provides industry and recreation for the city, with beaches, marinas and an active international shipping port. Three railroad lines and a major interstate highway also traverse Conneaut. Primary industries include plastics, healthcare, construction and seasonal tourism. Plastics company CSP of Ohio is a top employer, as are General Aluminum and millwork manufacturer CW Ohio.
Settled in 1799, Conneaut was incorporated as a village in 1834. The name Conneaut is derived from a Seneca Native term of uncertain meaning, though it is often interpreted as "place of many fish". Conneaut was a small rural town up until the end of the 19th century. In 1882, thanks to a 70-acre gift from the town, the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, popularly known as the Nickel Plate Road, chose Conneaut as the location for its roundhouse, shops and maintenance yards. The Bessemer & Erie Railroad and the New York Central Railroad also ran connections through Conneaut, linking Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania coal mines and steel mills. By 1902, Conneaut's population had more than doubled and the town reincorporated as a city. Businesses active during the first quarter of the 20th century include Cummins Can Company, the Brilliant Lamp Company, United Brick Company and the Conneaut Shovel Company. As with much of the Great Lakes region, manufacturing in Conneaut has declined in the second half of the 20th century.
