Cambridge, Ohio

The City of Cambridge is the county seat of Guernsey County, Ohio. Located along Wills Creek in the Appalachian Mountain foothills, Cambridge has a population of about 13,000. Cambridge has a strong industrial base, with employers including AMG Vanadium, Dywidag-Systems International and Colgate-Palmolive Company.

Cambridge was settled around 1806. The National Road, which would eventually run from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois, came through Cambridge in 1828. The railroad followed in 1854. In the early 20th century, Cambridge became known for its glassware and pottery factories. The Cambridge Glass Company was formed in 1873. Cambridge Glass became known for its pressed and blown glassware in vivid, opaque colors. After several changes of ownership in the 1950s, the factory closed for good in 1958 and was demolished in 1989. From 1934-1955, Universal Potteries made dinnerware with decal decorations, including a line for the Borden Company featuring its mascot, Elsie the Cow. In 1953, Vanadium Corporation of America built a new research and manufacturing facility in Cambridge, which is currently operated by AMG Vanadium. Other products made in Cambridge include cable, culverts, corrugated boxes and aftermarket auto parts.
