Bedford, Ohio
Bedford is a city in northeastern Ohio. A suburb of Cleveland, Bedford has a population of just over 13,000 occupying an area of 5.4 square miles. The waterfalls of Tinker's Creek, which run through the town center, once provided power for sawmills and furniture factories. Today, Bedford businesses provide a mix of manufacturing and service-sector jobs, with employers such as Hukill Chemical Corporation, Nature Stone/Ohio Concrete, Torq Corporation and Bedford Medical Center.
By 1837, Bedford had almost 500 residents, mainly in the area around Tinker's Creek. Hardwood and water power were in ample supply, and chair-making became a key early industry. The Taylor Chair Company, which still produces wooden chairs, has its origins in a small furniture business established by Benjamin Franklin Finch in 1816, making it the oldest manufacturing concern in the Western Reserve. The Akron, Bedford & Cleveland Railroad, completed in 1895, was at that time the longest electric railway in the world, transporting both passengers and freight until 1932. Industry expanded with the railroads: the Best Foundry Company produce gray iron castings from 1906-1928, and the McMyler-Interstate Company, formed in 1910 from the merger of four older companies, went on to build the 3,500-ton "League Island" crane for the U.S. Navy in 1919. Pharmaceutical maker Ben Venue Company, founded in 1938, continues today as Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., a subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation.
