Alliance, Ohio

Alliance is a city in Stark County, Ohio. The population of approximately 22,000 occupies an 8.6 square mile area in the northeast part of the state. Alliance is known as the "Carnation city", for the scarlet carnations raised by Dr. Levi Lamborn, and presented to his political rival, William McKinley, before debates. The colorful blooms were chosen as the state flower in 1904, and are the namesake of the annual Greater Alliance Carnation Festival. Much of Alliance's early activity centered on the railroads, and the metal forging industry, and the city has a number of historic sites dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Haines House Underground Railroad site and Glamorgan Castle. Alliance is also home to the University of Mount Union.

Founded in 1850 from the merger of three smaller towns, Alliance was planned as a railroad town, the intended junction of the Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Cleveland and Wellsville Railroads. As such, the Main Street was located near the railroad station, which was the center of transportation and business activity. After the Civil War, steel became a major industry in Alliance. In 1871, a Welsh miner named Thomas Rees Morgan founded a company that became Morgan Engineering Company in 1894. Despite a destructive fire in 2001, Morgan Engineering continues to produce overhead cranes in Alliance. American Steel Foundries was established in 1882 as the Solid Steel Company. Although the ASF plant closed in 2002, an offshoot company, Alliance Castings, has carried on in a reduced capacity since 2004. Another long-standing Alliance company, the Transue and Williams Steel Forging Company, has its roots in an 1898 company. The Transue & Williams Stamping Company, currently owned by the Durrell Company, continues to produce stamped metal goods in Alliance.
