Located in the Piedmont Triad region, Winston-Salem is the fourth largest city in North Carolina and serves as county seat of Forsyth County. The city is known variously as “Camel City”, for its tobacco industry, and “Twin City”, for its dual heritage. In 1889, the towns of Winston and Salem merged to become the city of Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem’s economic growth launched shortly after the arrival of the railroad. In 1874, R.J. Reynolds moved to the city and soon became a top businessman and one of the wealthiest individuals in North Carolina. By February 11, 1890, Reynolds’ business, the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company was a chartered corporation with full operations located in Winston-Salem. RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company is responsible for the innovation of the pre-packaged cigarette and the creation of Camel cigarettes. Within one year of the new product release, RJ Reynolds Tobacco sold 425 million packs of Camels.
