Greenville, North Carolina
Greenville, North Carolina is the county seat of Pitt County with a current population of 85,000. Founded in 1771, the community was originally called “Martinsborough” before being renamed Greenville in 1786, after Nathanael Greene, the American Revolutionary War hero. Greenville is known as “BMX Pro Town USA” and is home to East Carolina University and Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Greenville’s location on the banks of the area’s only navigable waterway, the Tar River, brought early growth to the community. By 1900, several established riverboat lines existed and Greenville became a major cotton export center. The city’s tobacco industry soon surpassed the profits of the cotton industry, and Greenville developed into one of North Carolina’s leading tobacco marketing and warehouse centers. In 1968, the city experienced significant economic development when Burroughs-Wellcome Company, a major pharmaceutical research and manufacturing firm, opened its doors in Greenville. Burroughs-Wellcome Company and Glaxo Laboratories merged in later years to become Glaxo Wellcome, Inc. Today, Greenville is a center for education, industry, medicine, and culture for eastern North Carolina. Greenville is currently home to East Carolina University, Rubbermaid, Grady-White Boats, and NACCO Materials Handling Group.
