Flushing, New York

Flushing is a neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City, in the state of New York. It is located about 10 miles east of Manhattan, across the East River. In 1898, Flushing was annexed into New York City, along with the other towns of Queens County to form the new borough of Queens. Bridge and subway access from the city prompted increased residential and commercial development, as workers moved out into the suburbs. Flushing Hospital Medical Center, founded in 1884, grew from a single room in a rented house to today's 293-bed campus. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, New York's second-largest public park has played host to two World's Fairs, in 1939 and 1964. Elaborate pavilions, exhibit halls and sculptures were built for the fairs, and a few remain as public monuments, including the 1964 Unisphere, and the Queens Museum of Art, which occupies the 1939 New York City Pavilion building.
