Fremont, Nebraska

Located in northeastern Nebraska along the Platte River, the city of Fremont serves as county seat of Dodge County with a population of about 27,000. Fremont was founded as an agricultural community on June 17, 1871 and two years later, became an official incorporated city of Nebraska. Lying just 20 minutes west of Omaha, Fremont offers a small-town feel with big city amenities and houses Midland University, a private liberal arts college.

Throughout the 1860s, Fremont saw a significant amount of traffic as a result of the Mormon Trail which passed along the north bank of the Platte River. Military, settlers, and hunters used this trail as a major overland route through Nebraska. The arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1866 stimulated Fremont’s development into a trade center for farmers and cattlemen. The community’s early agriculture-based economy was comprised of corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs, as well as light manufacturing industries, most notably hydraulics. The Fremont Department of Utilities is one of the oldest municipal utilities in the state; the water system started in 1885, the electric system in 1895, and the natural gas system was acquired in 1985. Today, the main employers in Fremont are Jayhawk Boxes, Mohawk Metals, and Hormel, the maker of SPAM.
