Butte, Montana

Originally known as one of the most notorious copper boomtowns of the American West, Butte, Montana presently serves as county seat of Silver Bow County and has an approximate population of 32,000. The city was founded as a mining town in the late 19th century and was Montana’s largest city until 1960. Butte’s significant employers are Northwestern Energy, Montana Tech, and St. James Community Hospital.
Butte’s location in the Silver Bow Creek Valley, a natural bowl sitting high in the Rockies, helped the community prosper in early years. Gold and silver mines were prominent prior to the advent of electricity and discovery of copper. Soon, the need for copper surpassed that of gold and silver, and Butte became known as “the Richest Hill on Earth” due to its abundance of valuable minerals. By the turn of the century, Butte was home to a handful of successful mining companies such as Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Moulton Gold and Silver Mining Company, and East Butte Copper Mining Company. After nearly a century of intensive mining and smelting, the Butte area is an environmental issue that is continuously worked on today. Environmental research and clean-up efforts have diversified local economy, as well as the presence of Renewable Energy Corporation, a chemicals technology plant that manufactures polysilicon.
