Mankato is nestled in the Emerald Green Valley, located along a large bend of the Minnesota River at its confluence with the Blue Earth River in southern Minnesota. It is a city in Blue Earth, Nicollet, and Le Sueur counties; and is the seat of Blue Earth County. Mankato has a population of nearly 40,000, making it the fourth largest city in Minnesota outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Initially, Mankato was called Mahkato, meaning greenish blue earth to Mankato’s first inhabitants, the Dakota Indians. An early spelling error was never corrected and Mahkato became Mankato. The city is a major regional center that has been ranked as the 14th “Most Livable Micropolitan City in the Nation”. The city is also is known for great parks and trails.
