Kalamazoo has been recognized world-wide for the production of wind engines, buggies, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, musical instruments, fishing reels, stoves, mint oils, cigars, paper products, beer and coffins. Most of Upjohn's original facilities remain, many have been renovated and some new buildings have been constructed. The "Paper City", as it was once nicknamed, was home to several paper mills. The Allied Paper Corporation operated several mills and employed 1,300 people in Kalamazoo during the late 1960s. As the forests of West Michigan were logged out, paper mills eventually closed. Today, significant industries in Kalamazoo are pharmaceuticals, plastics, medical equipment, fabricated metals, industrial robots, aircraft controls, chemicals and bedding plants.
