Kalamazoo occupies approximately 26 square miles in the southwestern corner of Michigan. The city is the county seat of Kalamazoo County and the principle city of the Kalamazoo-Portage metropolitan area, home to nearly 75,000 residents. The Allied Paper Corporation operated several mills and employed 1,300 people in Kalamazoo during the late 1960s. As the forests of West Michigan were logged out, paper mills eventually closed. Today, significant industries in Kalamazoo are pharmaceuticals, plastics, medical equipment, fabricated metals, industrial robots, aircraft controls, chemicals and bedding plants.
