Escanaba, Michigan

Escanaba is a city in and the county seat of Delta County, Michigan, spanning 16.5 square miles along the banana belt on the state's Upper Peninsula. There is also Escanaba Township, which is north of the city and is not adjacent to it, although a portion of the urban area around the city extends into the township.

Escanaba began as a port town in the mid-19th century, gaining recognition as a shipping point for iron ore, lumber and copper during the Civil War. Because of its location along the Little Bay de Noc at the northern edge of Lake Michigan, Escanaba continues to serve as a major shipping point for iron ore to other Great Lakes ports, particularly south to Chicago and northern Indiana. The local paper mill, which for many years was Mead Corporation's Publishing Paper Division, is currently operated by NewPage Corporation, and is now the area’s largest employer. In recent years, tourism has become increasingly significant for the local economy. Lake Michigan’s beaches and local fishing and hunting opportunities are major tourist attractions.
