Waltham, Massachusetts
The City of Waltham is located on the Charles River, in the Metrowest area of suburban Boston. Founded in 1636, the "Watch City" was a pioneer of the Industrial Revolution, introducing innovative factory planning methods. Today, Waltham is a bustling urban city of just over 59,000, and offers a diverse array of businesses, restaurants, educational and cultural opportunities. Waltham is home to Brandeis University and Bentley University, and several historic estates, such as Gore Place and the Robert Treat Paine house. The Northeast branch of the National Archives and Records Administration is located here, as is the Walter E. Fernald State School, the country's oldest public institution for the developmentally disabled.
Incorporated as a town in 1738, Waltham industrialized early. In 1814, Francis Cabot Lowell and Paul Moody invented the water-driven power loom and established the Boston Manufacturing Company, the first fully-integrated textile mill, along the banks of the Charles River. The mill owners also developed the Waltham System of employing young women from Yankee farm communities, housing them in company-owned dormitories. The Waltham System would later be employed in Lowell, Lawrence, and other mill towns. In 1854, the Waltham Watch Company established the first watch factory to use assembly line methods. The company was a dominant presence in Waltham for a century, and the factory district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 20th century, manufacturing in Waltham has declined, although defense contractor Raytheon is still a major employer. Though not a typical college town, Waltham's main industry today is education, as two of its top employers are universities. Tufts Health Plan, Bank of America and National Grid complete the top five. Waltham is also actively developing its arts community, and the Moody Street area boasts a multi-ethnic mix of restaurants, shops, and nightspots.
