Somerville, Massachusetts
The City of Somerville is located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, just two miles north of Boston. It is the most densely populated city in New England, with approximately 77,500 residents occupying an area just over 4 square miles. Thanks to decades of immigration and industrialization, Somerville is an ethnically-diverse, largely working-class community. Proximity to Harvard and Tufts Universities, among others, has also made Somerville a draw for students and professionals, and given rise to a vigorous arts community. Somerville's Davis Square neighborhood features live music venues, such as Somerville Theatre and Johnny D's, coffeehouses, galleries, vintage clothing stores and the Rosebud Diner, established in 1941.
First settled in 1630, Somerville was originally a part of Charlestown. Brickmaking was the prominent industry when the railroad came through in 1830, but Somerville was still mostly rural when it separated from the more urbanized Charlestown in 1842.Thirty years later, Somerville experienced its own population and manufacturing boom, and reincorporated as a city. Immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Portugal and other parts of Europe settled in Somerville, creating distinct neighborhoods centered around the numerous city squares. Each square developed its own businesses and entertainments; at one time, Somerville boasted 14 movie palaces. Several grocery chains had their origins in Somerville, including First National Stores, better known as Finast, and the Economy Grocery Stores Company (1914), later renamed Stop & Shop. Meatpacking companies, warehouses, and commercial bakeries were established to supply the grocery chains. The Groisser & Schlager Iron Works built barges for the U.S. Navy in WWII. In recent decades, Somerville has experienced several waves of gentrification, particularly following the extension of the MBTA's Red Line subway through Davis Square. In the Brickbottom district, several old industrial buildings have been converted to artist's studios.
