Newton, Massachusetts
The City of Newton is a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. Although it has a population of 83,829, Newton is made up of a collection of thirteen villages which create the feeling of a series of small towns, rather than a large city, while offering many of the amenities of both. Despite having no legal definition or specific boundaries, many of Newton's villages have their own post office and distinct "downtown" areas, schools and public spaces. Newton residents enjoy easy access to Boston by bus, trolley and commuter rail. Several main routes run through Newton, forming part of the Boston Marathon race route, including the infamous Heartbreak Hill at mile 21.
Newton was originally part of a settlement which became Cambridge in 1638. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1688, but was not given the name Newton until 1766. Newton was reincorporated as a city in 1873. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Charles River provided water for various small mills, particularly in the villages of Newton Upper Falls and Newton Lower Falls. The mills produced goods such as chocolate, paper, glue and snuff. The Nonantum Worsted Company, established in the late 19th century, lends its name to another of Newton's villages. Although a number of dams were built to control the river, the available water power was insufficient to support a large manufacturing base, and parts of Newton remained farmland as late as the 1950s. Instead, early establishment of railway and trolley lines led to Newton becoming a popular "streetcar suburb," first for wealthy Boston businessmen, and later for the middle class, as automobiles became more available in the 1920s. Today, many Newton residents also work in Newton, for such employers as Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Boston College and the Chestnut Hill Mall.
Newton has seen substantial residential, municipal and commercial building growth, particularly during the 20th century, which has made asbestos exposure a concern for construction workers and their loved ones. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with asbestos cancer in Newton, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos lawyer.
