Hyde Park, Massachusetts

Hyde Park is a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Originally incorporated as a town in 1868, Hyde Park was created from villages of Dorchester, Milton, and Dedham. Hyde Park is also home to 19th and early 20th century mill buildings, an architectural award-winning branch library, and a performing arts center located in a former opera house.

Prior to the 1850s, Hyde Park was largely farmland. In the latter half of the 19th century, industry developed along the Neponset River and its tributary, Mother Brook, and in the neighborhood of Readville. Alpheus Perley Blake formed the "Twenty Associates" who helped to develop and incorporate Hyde Park, which soon became a popular "streetcar suburb," with handsome Victorian homes, bustling factories and modest farmsteads all co-existing. By 1890, Hyde Park businesses included the Tileston & Hollingworth paper mill, Boston Gossamer Rubber Co., and Brainard Milling Machine Company. Other types of industry included several textile mills, commercial greenhouses, stove and machine tool manufacturers, and a curled hair factory. In 1903, the B.F. Sturtevant Company relocated to Boston following a major fire. The industrial fan manufacturer erected a 20-acre factory complex in the Readville section of town. The factory, designed by notable mill architects Lockwood, Green and Company, employed 1500 workers, and included its own forge, foundry and machine shops. Westinghouse Electric Company acquired Sturtevant in 1946, and immediately began a plan of modernization, replacing aging machinery and preparing for new product lines. Westinghouse sold the division in 1985, and the plant ceased operation in 1989.
