Hyannis, Massachusetts
Hyannis is a village of the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, settled in 1639. Hyannis is located on the south side of Cape Cod, facing Nantucket Sound. Attractive ocean views and unspoiled beaches have made Hyannis a popular summer resort, and it has become a transportation hub for Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, with highway, air, water and limited rail access. Tourism drives much of the local economy, with restaurants and retail shopping districts such as the Cape Cod Mall accounting for a good portion of Hyannis's revenue.
Cape Cod’s earliest settlers attempted to cultivate the land in ways most familiar to them. However, the crops and farming practices of England were unsuited to Cape Cod's thin soils and ever-shifting sands. Due to lack of water power, industry never took hold as it did elsewhere in Massachusetts, though whaling and fishing were more successful. The development of the Cape Cod Canal (1870 to 1914) allowed for quicker access to Boston markets and goods. Towards the end of the 19th century, improved rail and road access helped attract wealthy city dwellers, who built summer cottages and marinas for recreational boating around Hyannis’s large natural harbor. In the early 20th century, area businessmen began raising funds to establish a hospital. Dr. Charles E. Harris for several years staged backyard circus performances, with proceeds going to the hospital fund. Cape Cod Hospital was established in 1920, and Dr. Harris was instrumental in establishing an X-ray department. Hyannis today continues the tradition of summer tourism, with two thriving commercial districts, outdoor recreation, and a museum dedicated to President John F. Kennedy. The Kennedy family compound is one of the more notable residences in the affluent neighborhood of Hyannis Port. Cape Cod Potato Chips, founded in 1980 by residents Steve and Lynn Bernard, has its factory and headquarters in Hyannis.
