Gardner, Massachusetts
Gardner is a city of just over 20,000 residents in North Central Massachusetts. Though once renowned as the "Furniture Capital of New England" for its chair manufacturing, Gardner is now largely residential, with some industrial and commercial areas remaining. Major employers in Gardner today include Heywood Hospital, and Mount Wachusett Community College.
Gardner was first settled in 1764, incorporating as a town in 1785. The surrounding forests provided a ready source of timber, and Gardner quickly became a center for furniture production, particularly chairs. In 1826, the five Heywood brothers began hand-producing wooden chairs, a business which would eventually become B.F. Heywood & Co., and later Heywood-Wakefield Company. From wicker furniture and hand-turned chairs, the company would progress to the steam-bent wooden "Modern" furniture line for which they are best known. The Simplex Time Recorder Company was founded in 1894, and produced time clocks and synchronized clocks for schools. By 1910, the "Chair City" had grown to include 20 chair factories, including Conant-Ball Company, S. Bent & Brothers, and Nichols & Stone. In 1923, Gardner reincorporated as a city. In 1902, the Gardner State Colony was established as a residential institution for the mentally disturbed. Agricultural and handicrafts facilities provided useful occupation for patients, and allowed the colony to be largely self-supporting. The Colony was closed in 1975, and in 1981, the property was converted and reopened as a medium-security correctional facility. With the closing of the Nichols & Stone factory in 2008, the era of furniture production in Gardner had come to a close. The Heywood-Wakefield complex has been converted into apartments and office suites. Several furniture outlet stores remain, but industry in Gardner is much reduced.
