Framingham, Massachusetts
Framingham is a town of approximately 66,000 people, located west of Boston along Route 9. Founded in 1700, Framingham has long combined rural and residential areas with modern industrial neighborhoods. Busy retail centers exist within a few minutes’ drive of bucolic state parks and conservation lands. The historic town center includes many 19th century structures, including Framingham State University, the Village Hall, and Edgell Memorial Library.
Early industry in Framingham included a grist mill, textile factories, a maker of straw hats and bonnets, and the Para Rubber Shoe Company. In South Framingham, railroad access aided the development of mills and factories. The Dennison Manufacturing Company was founded in 1844 to manufacture paper boxes for jewelry and watches. Eventually expanding to produce paper novelties and office supplies, the company grew into a sizable industrial complex. Dennison and the nearby General Motors Assembly Plant, which opened in 1947, were major employers in Framingham for many years. South Framingham was also home to a women's prison, the State Muster Grounds, and a National Guard Armory. After World War II, the population increase of the baby boom also brought a corresponding increase in housing development. Shoppers' World, one of the first open-air shopping malls in the country, opened in 1951, touching off a wave of retail construction that would cause the area bounded by Route 9, Route 30, and the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to become known as "the Golden Triangle." The huge futuristic dome of Jordan Marsh, Shoppers' World’s anchor store, was a familiar landmark along Route 9 until it was demolished in 1994, replaced by a large retail development that includes a several new malls, condominiums and a 16-screen movie theater. Other current Framingham businesses include Bose Corporation and ice cream manufacturer Sealtest.
Significant housing and retail development in Framingham during the 20th century may have put workers in the construction industry and other trades at risk for mesothelioma and other types of asbestos disease. Mesothelioma oncologists in and around Framingham are listed at the bottom of the page. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may want to consider contacting a mesothelioma lawyer.
