Falmouth, Massachusetts
The Town of Falmouth is located at the southwestern corner of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Much of Falmouth is surrounded by water, with Buzzards Bay to the West, and Vineyard Sound to the south. Small ponds and creeks extend through the town from the shoreline, making up approximately 1/5 of Falmouth's 54.4 square mile area. Falmouth's year-round population of 32,660 follows the representative town meeting form of government. Today Falmouth is well known as a center of marine research, carried out by organizations such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Woods Hole Research Center.
Falmouth was incorporated in 1686. Like much of Cape Cod, Falmouth's terrain is composed of glacier-deposited materials. Early industry in Falmouth was adapted to the geographical conditions and ocean access: farming, salt works, whaling, shipping, and sheep herding. In the early 19th century, Merino sheep were introduced locally and water-powered mills established to process the raw wool. Train service began in the 1870s, making Falmouth more desirable as a summer residence, and giving residents access to the Boston markets. Berry crops, such as cranberries and strawberries, did well in the sandy soil, and could now be sold in the city as well as locally. In the early 20th century, attempts were made at large scale dairy farming. Even with the railroad, transportation in Falmouth was somewhat limited, with only one major roadway, Route 28. However, highway improvements, and increased use of nearby Otis Air National Guard Base during WWII resulted in increased population growth and home construction. Today, Falmouth is served by several bus and train lines, and is home to the Wood's Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority ferry service. Falmouth operates its own fire and police services, and has several public and private schools. Falmouth Hospital, established in 1963, serves most of the Upper Cape, and in summer has one of the busiest emergency centers in the state.
Periods of increased home construction and roadwork in Falmouth throughout the second half of the 20th century may have exposed workers to asbestos products. Exposure to asbestos-containing building materials puts workers at risk for asbestos disease.
