Curtis Bay, Maryland
Curtis Bay is an industrial neighborhood of about 4.5 square miles in south Baltimore, Maryland. Located on the Curtis Bay waterfront, Curtis Bay is home to the United States Coast Guard Yard, established in 1899. Although the area has been settled since the 17th century, Curtis Bay was annexed to Baltimore in 1919, thus the area's southern and western boundaries are defined by the Baltimore City Limits as they existed in 1919. The Patapsco River forms a natural boundary to the north and east. Manufacturing has largely declined in Curtis Bay, and today the area is more residential, with retail and service-related businesses.
Curtis Bay officially began to take shape in 1874, through the efforts of the Patapsco Land Company of Baltimore City. Railroad service was established in 1882, and streetcar service in 1894. Industries soon began to locate in Curtis Bay, including the South Baltimore Car Wheel Company and the Baltimore Sugar Refinery. The property most recently occupied by Marlen Trading Company, was first used by Maryland Car Wheel Works from 1900-1948, and has seen a succession of scrap metal and surplus companies in the years between. In 1931, E.I. DuPont de Nemours formed a joint venture with Commercial Pigments Corporation that created Krebs Pigment and Color Corporation. Krebs was eventually reabsorbed by DuPont in 1942. World War II brought an influx of workers to the nearby Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard, contributing to housing growth in Curtis Bay. In the post-war years, industry declined in the area. The United States Coast Guard Yard at Curtis Bay remains an active shipbuilding and repair facility and training center.
Curtis Bay's history of heavy industry and construction, much of it concentrated during a period when asbestos-containing materials were widely used, makes asbestos exposure an ongoing concern. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for malignant mesothelioma. Asbestos attorneys may also be able to assist if you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Curtis Bay.
