Newport, Kentucky

Newport is a city in Campbell County, Kentucky located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Occupying a land area of 3.5 square miles, Newport serves a population of approximately 17,000. Newport offers a blend of historic amenities and contemporary development. Newport is home to the East Row Historic neighborhood, one of Kentucky’s largest and finest historic districts. The Riverfront area of Newport includes attractions such as the Newport Aquarium, World Peace Bell, and Newport on the Levee (the area’s largest tourist attraction).

Founded in 1795, Newport’s early industry included the manufacturing of rope and woolen products. In the mid 1800s, Newport became a hub for trade, industry and culture. The 1860s brought Newport mass transit in the form of mule driven streetcars. By the early 20th century, Newport had electricity. It was also around this time that Newport native John Thompson invented the Thompson Machine Gun (“Tommy Gun”) that became known nationwide for its use by gangsters. A flood in 1937 left much of Newport under water, and would be known as Newport’s worst natural disaster to date. The floodwall that is part of today’s landscape was completed in 1948, as a result of the flood of 1937. The 1940s through 1980s was a turbulent period for Newport as gambling halls and Vegas style nightclubs operated in the city. During this time, Newport became Cincinnati’s playground earning it the nickname, “Sin City”. Efforts to clean up the city led to political and social change and rewarded Newport with its current stature of today. Today, Newport is home to approximately 600 businesses employing 6,500 people. The leading business sectors are service, retail, government, manufacturing, real estate, and construction.
