Kansas City, Kansas

Kansas City, Kansas

Kansas City is a city on the eastern border of Kansas, at the juncture of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Kansas City sometimes referred to as KCK to distinguish it from neighboring Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO), is the third largest city in Kansas, with a population of 145,786. Kansas City has an active and diverse economy, with transportation, manufacturing, tourism and healthcare well represented. Google recently selected Kansas City as the site for an experimental fiber-optics network. Kansas City attractions include the Kansas Speedway racetrack, the 1917 Argentine Carnegie Library, and the Village West development, a retail, dining and entertainment venue. Kansas City is also home to Donnelly College and the University of Saint Mary.

Kansas City's early history is linked to that of Kansas City, Missouri. In 1854, Kansas-Nebraska Act opened up those territories to settlement, with the residents of each area allowed to choose whether slavery would be allowed. Most of the surrounding states were free states, while Missouri, where many of Kansas City, Kansas's settlers came from, was not, touching off a series of bitter border skirmishes referred to as "Bleeding Kansas." Kansas became a state in 1861, and Kansas City was incorporated as a city in 1886. As the crossroads of two rivers, three overland trails, and several railroads, Kansas City became a transport center. In 1871, the Kansas City Stockyards opened in Kansas City, Missouri, and meatpacking quickly became the city's dominant industry. Armour & Company opened their meatpacking plant in 1870, followed by Swift & Company in 1892. Soap was often manufactured as a byproduct of the meatpacking process, and Peet Brothers Manufacturing Company (later Colgate-Palmolive) got their start in Kansas City in 1902. General Motors began operating its Fairfax Assembly Plant shortly after World War II. Today, Kansas City's manufacturing tradition continues to grow. Sara Lee Corp. opened a new processed-meat plant in 2011, and Zeolyst International is expanding its chemical plant.
