Whiting, Indiana

The city of Whiting spans 3.3 square miles in the northwest corner of Indiana, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Whiting, home to nearly 5,000 citizens, is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area in Lake County. Historic buildings in the city include an Andrew Carnegie Library, and the Hoosier Theater. Employment in the area has largely been dominated by industrial jobs, particularly LTV Steel in East Chicago, Mittal Steel (formerly Inland), and the BP refinery.

Settled in the mid-1800s, Whiting finally incorporated as a town in 1895 and as a city in 1903. In 1851, the Michigan Southern Railroad was the first of three rail lines built in Whiting. Standard Oil Company sought a mid-western industrial site convenient to rail and water transportation to refine crude oil. Whiting fit the requirements, and in 1889, Standard Oil began purchasing land along the lakefront. With the refinery, the community's history changed forever. By the early 1920s, the refinery employed over 4,000 workers, and Whiting’s population grew to approximately 10,000. Standard Oil, which went on to became Amoco before it merged with BP, is known today as Whiting Refinery and is capable of processing up to 405,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It is one of the largest oil refineries in the United States. The facility is primarily located in Whiting, though portions of the 1,400 acres complex span into the neighboring cities of Hammond and East Chicago.
