Melrose Park, Illinois

The village of Melrose Park is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. Located in Cook County, Melrose Park was created in 1882 from an unincorporated area of Proviso Township. Melrose Park has a current population of just over 23,000. Melrose Park has a stable manufacturing base, much of it established in the years following World War II. Current employers include Navistar, Inc., Interlake Mecalux, and Alberto Culver. Melrose Park is also home to the world's only manufacturer of arcade-style coin-operated pinball games, Stern Pinball, Inc.

Melrose Park grew slowly at first, with industrial development increasing rapidly after World War I, helped in part by the village's proximity to the giant Proviso Freight Yards. In 1909, the Chicago Malleable Iron Company acquired the Latrobe Steel & Coupler Company plant in Melrose Park, changing its name to National Malleable and Steel Castings Company in 1923. As National Castings, the plant operated into the 21st century. The United Biscuit Company had its headquarters and a bakery of its Sawyer Biscuit division in Melrose Park from 1953 until 1966, when, as Keebler Company, it moved to nearby Elmhurst. Zenith Electronics' Rauland tube plant operated from about the mid-1960s until 2003. Melrose Park was also home to the well-known amusement park Kiddieland. The park opened in 1929, and expanded several times through the years, until its closure in 2009. Many of the park's vintage rides, including a carousel and wooden roller coaster, were auctioned to other parks or private collectors.
