Lemont, Illinois

Lemont is a village of about 16,600 residents in northeast Illinois. Founded in 1836, Lemont grew along with the Illinois and Michigan canal, which was completed in 1848. Over the years, Lemont's various industries have included quarried limestone, which faces many of the village's historic buildings, oil refining, and scientific research. Many of Lemont's early settlers were immigrant workers who remained after the canal was finished. Agricultural work was common, but a large formation of dolomitic limestone discovered during the canal’s construction provided a secondary industry for the skilled masons and quarry workers. The quarries produced building materials into the 1920s, when concrete began to be preferred. The Chicago Water Tower is made from Lemont limestone. Although the railroads arrived in 1854, the canal continued to be a major transportation source until 1933 and is now a National Heritage Corridor. A second, larger canal - the Sanitary and Ship Canal - opened in 1900 and is still in use. In 1928, the Globe Oil & Refining Company purchased a refinery that had been built a few years earlier. In 1954, the refinery was acquired by Pure Oil Company, which later merged with Union Oil. A new, larger refinery was built in the late 1960s, and is now operated by CITGO Petroleum Company. The country's first national science laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, was founded in 1946.
