Elgin, Illinois

Situated on the banks of the Fox River, the city of Elgin, Illinois is a northwestern suburb of Chicago with a population of over 107,000 people. Elgin is the eighth largest city in Illinois and the 241st largest city in the United States. Incorporated in 1854, the city’s current large employers are Sherman Hospital, Chicago Rawhide Manufacturing Company, and Elgin Mental Health Center (formerly Illinois Northern Hospital for the Insane).

By the 20th century, the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad reached Elgin, connecting the city to Chicago and other urban centers. From the turn of the century through the 1960s, Elgin National Watch Company was the largest producer of fine watches in the United States and employed three generations of local “Elginites” at its factory. Bohler Steel, now known as Bohler UddeHolm U.S., opened a steel mill in Elgin, IL, thereby establishing the company’s first North American operations. Bohler maintains a mill and headquarters in Elgin today.
