Dixon, Illinois

Located on the Rock River in Northern Illinois, Dixon is the county seat of Lee County and has a population of approximately 16,000 people. The city is named after its founder, John Dixon, who operated Dixon’s Ferry in the 19th century. Dixon’s Ferry became Fort Dixon during the Black Hawk War and several prominent people, including Abraham Lincoln, were posted here during the war. The city was also the childhood home of former President Ronald Reagan.

Throughout Dixon’s early history, the Rock River waterway played a significant role in the community’s economy. By the turn of the 20th century a dam, a saw mill, and a water company popped up along the banks of the river. Many other businesses were drawn to the area including Dixon Power and Lighting Company, Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd), and Raynor Manufacturing Company. Raynor remains in Dixon today; they are the oldest garage door manufacturer in the U.S. with dealers located in almost all of the 50 states. Additionally, Dixon is home to the oldest cement company in the United States, Medusa Portland Cement Company (originally named Sandusky Portland Cement Company).
