Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the shore of Lake Lanier, the city of Gainesville is the county seat in Hall County and occupies 27 square miles of land. Because of a large number of poultry processing plants located in the city, Gainesville is sometimes called the “chicken capital of the world”. The King’s Delight and Mar-Jac processing facilities continue operations in the city today.
The Airline Railroad, later named Southern Railroad, ushered in a new era to Gainesville. The city population swelled and the textile industry ran the economy. In 1957, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Lake Sidney Lanier, a 38,000 acre lake that adds $2 billion annually to Gainesville’s economy.
