Dublin, Georgia

Located in central Georgia on the banks of the Oconee River, the city of Dublin is the county seat of Laurens County and sits halfway between Savannah and Atlanta. Dublin originally served as home to Native Americans of the Muskogee people before European settlers arrived. The town was named such because the Middle Georgia piedmont reminded Irish settlers of terrain in their own country. On December 9, 1812, the city of Dublin was officially incorporated.

In early years, Dublin’s industry was dominated by lumbering, cotton and wool commerce; several saw mills opened in town and sheep raising became an established business. Following the Civil War, Dublin played an important role as a main, inland river port due to its upper end location on the navigable portion of the Oconee River. The launch of the railroad attracted more industry to the area well into the 20th century. J.P. Stevens & Company, along with Dublin Woolen Mills, were two of the initial players in Dublin’s textile history. J.P. Stevens & Company became profitable organization and grew into the company known today as West Point Stevens. Thanks to the construction of Interstate 16 just south of Dublin, the city has experienced continuous economic growth and has lived up to its nickname as the “Green and Growing” city. The Veterans Administration Center, as well as the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center (originally a US Naval Hospital), operate facilities in Dublin.

Because of Dublin’s longstanding manufacturing history, asbestos exposure in the workplace has been an issue over the years. If you were exposed to asbestos in Dublin and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
