The city of Columbus is an authentic river town located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about 100 miles south of Atlanta. Columbus serves as the county seat of Muscogee County and is the third largest city in the state. Since Columbus’ founding in 1828, the Chattahoochee River has provided the city with a source of food, energy, employment and recreation.

Originally a textile mill town reliant upon agriculture, the industries of Columbus expanded during the Civil War to include ironworks, a sword factory and a shipyard. The reconstruction era brought immediate prosperity to Columbus; the Springer Opera House opened its doors and factories such as the Eagle and Phoenix Manufacturing Company were revived. Columbus’ largest employer, Fort Benning, became established by the early 20th century. Throughout the camp’s years as an operating base, it has been home to the 2nd Armored Division, 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and the 4th Infantry Division. Expansion from the 1950s to 1970s attracted more prominent industries to Columbus including Aflac Insurance, Synovus, and Carmike Cinemas. During this time extensive renovations were completed on the historic Columbus Iron Works, a Civil War munitions factory, and other historic sites throughout the city.

Today Columbus is a thriving community of 280,000 people and is ranked the 121st largest city in the United States.
