Bartow, Florida
Nicknamed the “City of Oaks and Azaleas”, Bartow was founded in 1851 and is the county seat of Polk County, Florida. The city can be found near the source of the Peace River, approximately 39 miles east of the Tampa Bay area and 50 miles southwest of the Greater Orlando area. Bartow grew rapidly throughout the 1870s and 1880s and on July 1, 1882, the community that had been known variously as Fort Blount, Peace Creek, and Reidsville changed its name to Bartow and became an incorporated city. Current driving sectors in Bartow’s economy include government, mining, agriculture, and tourism.
Since the discovery of phosphate rock in 1881, phosphate mining has been a huge factor in Bartow’s success and growth over the years. The Bartow area is the richest source of phosphate in the world and provides 75% of the United States’ supply and 25% of the world’s supply. As a result numerous mining, chemical and agricultural companies have operated facilities in the area, including Ashland Chemical Company, Electric Phosphate Company, American Cyanamid, Armour Agricultural, Morris Fertilizer Company, and Farmland Industries. Growth throughout most of the 20th century was slow-going for Bartow, as much of the land was owned by phosphate mining companies. Residential development was impractical in the community up until the late 1990s when many operations moved southward. Currently, the city is taking on a major development project that includes plans for new homes, commercial space, three schools, and a golf course. Bartow’s population is expected to grow to over 45,000 residents once the development project is completed.
