Newark, Delaware
Newark was founded in 1694 and is home to the University of Delaware. Located along the banks of the Christina and White Clay Creeks on the Delaware River, Newark experienced swift growth in colonial times thanks to its natural features and prime location. The city of Newark was officially born and incorporated in 1758.
In 1837, Newark became linked with major points north and west when it earned a stop on the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad. This helped fuel an increased population and substantial retail market, in conjunction with industrial and commercial expansion. Dupont, also known as E.I. Du Pont De Nemours & Company, opened Haskill Lab in 1953 within Newark’s borders. Haskill was one of the first industrial toxicology labs of the time and was comprised of five divisions - toxicology, biochemistry, pathology, physiology and physics. In addition to Dupont’s facilities, Chrysler Corp started a production plant in Newark which first manufactured tanks for the U.S. military. Following the Korean War the Chrysler plant converted to civilian vehicle manufacturing. Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation, National Vulcanized Fiber Company and FMC Corporation operated facilities out of Newark as well.
Today downtown Newark is a diverse, lively community. Historic buildings, popular Main Street festivals, high-end housing and attractively designed murals welcome visitors, students and residents alike. Due to Newark’s active industrial background and manufacturing history, exposure to asbestos in the workplace has been a regular problem. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Newark, you may be at risk to develop an asbestos disease like mesothelioma. We provide information about mesothelioma treatment options in and around the Newark area at the bottom of this page.
