Torrington, Connecticut

Nestled in the Litchfield hills in northwestern Connecticut, Torrington offers a mix of modern sophistication and traditional New England charm. Though incorporated as a town in 1740, it wasn’t until 1923 that Torrington was chartered as a city. Torrington is the largest city in Fairfield County; it is home to more than 36,000 residents. The city is has been the industrial and commercial hub of northwestern Connecticut for more than a century. The downtown area boasts the historic Warner Theatre and the notable Nutmeg Conservatory as well as an eclectic mix of antique dealers, art houses, art deco architecture and small specialty shops.

Torrington began as a rural agricultural community. However, by the early 19th century, significant industrial growth began after the construction of a woolen mill by Frederick Wolcott in 1813. Thus attracting a large workforce and demand for housing, goods and services. This small village that began around the mill was called Wolcottville for many years; today it is the central business district of Torrington. By the mid-1800s, two brass mills were constructed, making Torrington a center for the brass industry; and the Naugatuck Valley Railroad was completed, connecting Torrington with other cities and spurring further industrial growth. During this period a variety of metal products were produced in Torrington including needles, brass, ice skates, hardware, bicycles, and tacks. Nearly a century later, the face of Torrington changed forever when in 1955, a catastrophic flood significantly changed the city, ripping up Main Street and washing numerous buildings away. In recent years, Torrington has experienced commercial growth and continues to preserve its heritage. Additionally, the city has begun revitalization efforts in the downtown area to attract residents and visitors alike to the city.
